Sitemaps Audit for CHANEL

Sitemaps Audit for CHANEL

Description

🧠 Context

As part of CHANEL's SEO governance, an audit was conducted to assess the consistency of XML and HTML sitemap contribution rules. The objective was to verify that:

  • All indexable resources (excluding noindex) are included in the XML sitemap;
  • Resources listed in the XML sitemap also appear in the HTML sitemap — except for certain pages like PDPs;

Suspected inconsistencies were reported, motivating a full review of the sitemap contribution rules and exception cases.

🚧 Challenge

Many pages returning HTTP 200 and indexable were missing from both the XML and HTML sitemaps, while others were mistakenly included. This led to under-exploration of important SEO pages by search engines.

💡 Solution

A comprehensive matrix was built, combining:

  • Page type (PLP, editorial, axis, etc.)
  • Indexability status
  • Presence in XML sitemap
  • Presence in HTML sitemap
  • Redundancy or missing pages

This audit allowed identification of faulty contribution rules, provided recommendations for generation script adjustments, and established the foundation for continuous sitemap quality monitoring.

Mission

Technical and functional audit of CHANEL’s XML and HTML sitemaps to ensure SEO coverage of strategic pages.
