Robots.txt File Configuration for CHANEL China
Description
🧠 Context
The robots.txt file for the Chinese domain chanel.cn was previously a copy of the global chanel.com version. However, specific differences — such as the sitemap URL — justified having a dedicated file.
🚧 Challenge
Search engines crawling the Chinese site were receiving incorrect directives. For instance, chanel.cn referenced the global sitemap www.chanel.com instead of the correct localized version: https://www.chanel.cn/cn/sitemap.xml.
💡 Solution
A new dedicated robots.txt file was defined for the Chinese domain:
- Removed irrelevant or outdated directives (Verbolia, Google Shopping...)
- Preserved relevant sections (my-account, API, search, etc.)
- Updated sitemap declaration to correctly reference
chanel.cn
The new file was handed off to the technical teams for replacement of the existing version, ensuring better search engine handling of the Chinese domain.
